From May 18th to 20th, within the framework of European Solidarity Project, “City Makers”, the heart of Weimar Westvorstadt came alive with the vibrant sounds and sights of Frö(h)lich Platzfest. With hundreds of neighbours coming together to celebrate public space, the event was nothing short of spectacular.
The three-day festival showcased a rich tapestry of activities and performances, celebrating the diverse talents and cultures within Weimar’s community. Local musicians, dancers, and artists took to the stage, captivating audiences with their performances. The variety of acts ensured that there was something for everyone to enjoy.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the festival was the closure of traffic in the area. The temporary pedestrianization of August-Frölich-Platz allowed festival-goers to roam freely and safely. Local authorities, volunteers and our youth ambassadors did an outstanding job in managing the logistics, ensuring minimal disruption to residents and maintaining a safe environment for all.
Community involvement played a crucial role in the festival’s success. Many different actors contributed actively, with residents volunteering their time and resources. The collaborative effort was evident in every aspect of the festival. Discussions on local history and culture not only entertained but also fostered a sense of unity and shared learning among participants.
Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive. Many expressed their appreciation for the inclusive and welcoming atmosphere of the festival. The sense of community spirit and togetherness was palpable, with neighbors forging new connections and strengthening existing ones.
The necessary next steps in order to improve the quality of space became clear. A regular closure of the street during weekends became a dominant wish. An idea for a series of ideation co-creation workshops was developed.
In conclusion, the neighborhood festival at August-Frölich-Platz was a tremendous success, thanks to the active participation and collaboration of various community members. The event not only entertained but also reinforced the bonds that make our community special. As we look forward to future festivals, we celebrate the collective effort that made this event memorable and impactful for all who attended.
